Tune of the Week: Pipeline

Oppresively, the USA is the only country that celebrates Labor Day in a month that is not May. This seems to be a good reason to pull out Depeche Mode’s third album, “Construction Time Again”. This whole album is a reflection of how toxic the industiralized world is. There are songs about wealth disparity, the suffering environment as well as the need for more than love. The roots of the concept stem from the band having visited Thailand while on tour. Seeing widespread poverty and child exploitation made an indelible mark on songwriter Martin Gore.

“Pipeline” is the track about work, the working class and working conditions. The production is 100% sampled sounds recorded in a railyard near the studio they were working in. Here is a video in which co-producer Gareth Jones breaks the track down:
